About Me

workaway1.jpgYou should read this blog if any one of the following 10 things apply to you and your life in general:

  1. If you are moving from one phase of your life into another.
  2. If you find moving from one phase of your life to another very difficult.
  3. If you find moving from one phase of your life to another very difficult and you would like to mourn the loss of your youth or career or whatever and need someone to remind you that everything is going to be okay.
  4. If you believe everything is going to be okay.
  5. If you don’t believe everything is going to be okay.
  6. If you aspire to be kind to yourself and others.
  7. If you are an asshole, sometimes, because you are a human with emotions.
  8. If you are bored at work and need something to do that might fill a fraction of the empty hole that has become your heart as you mindlessly surf the interwebs.
  9. If you are afraid of making changes in your life because the unknown is scary and you want to read about someone else trying really hard and failing miserably because it will make you feel better to know you’re probably doing way better than someone else AKA me.
  10. If you like to dance because if you’re a person who likes to dance then you’re already a person who has figured out at least one thing about life which is that it’s always better to just do things even if you suck at it. Or maybe you’re really good at dancing. Doesn’t matter. I just needed ten things to round this list out.

I write about moving through life and how hard it is to figure out how to only bring with you the things that serve you well. I write about what has worked for me and what has not in the pursuit of moving through transitions. I write about those transitions. I write about how it hurts to change and how it’s always better on the other side. Truly. And I will do all this sometimes through clenched teeth and often times through  questionable, self-deprecating humor and end with some somewhat clumsy-yet-profound revelations of what it means to be a human.

You should read this blog if you like to talk about really serious things and take them really seriously but with enough humor and respect for yourself as a human that you understand that most things, even the most terrible things, possess a grain of joy somewhere in the midst of all the bullshit. So, if that’s you, you should consider reading on and maybe even subscribing. (I read on the site of a very successful blogger that you should include a “call to action” in your About Me section. So there, I’ve done it. I’m doing a lot of things. Not sure where any of it is going, though. Also, not even sure what happens when you subscribe so if you choose to take that route, please let me know what happens.)

Now, I think I’m supposed to include some little facts about myself. So, my name is Maggie. But I prefer to be addressed formally as Saint Margaret, Ms. Dizzle, Sister Mary Margaret or, in some circles (that don’t exist) Queen Margaret. No one calls me Queen Margaret. Actually, I take that back. My friend Jennifer calls me Queen Margaret after I told her the story about how, in the fourth grade, I found out there was a Queen Margaret and tried to get my friends to call me that but they refused. I even tried shortening it to “QM” to get ’em on board, but no dice. So, shout out to Jennifer for making one of my dreams come true.

Anyway, I moved from the Chicago area to Rapid City, South Dakota in 2013. Music is really important to me. I like to play the piano and write my own music and sing covers. Music is one of the most important things to me, actually. I like running around in the Black Hills. I like doing yoga. I like smoking too many cigarettes and then quitting every other year for the last fifteen years of my life. I like reading creative non-fiction and also anything ever conceived by Margaret Atwood, Sylvia Plath or Anne Sexton. My favorite photographer is Sally Mann. I will never finish reading Thoreau’s “masterpiece” Walden because I think it is unnecessarily dense and verbose. But if you are considering reading it or feel guilty that you have not, let me save you the trouble and sum it up for you right here- GO INTO NATURE AND YOU WILL FIND INNER PEACE. Seriously. You will. And you don’t need to read a long, boring book to do it.

So, that pretty much sums up what this blog is about, why you should read it, and who I am in a very tiny, sporadic nutshell.

Now to explain why I am even writing all this in the first place.

Here’s The Fucking Thing was born of my own barren, happy, confused, womb because when someone, like myself, says “Here’s the fucking thing…” it means some real shit is about to be laid out on the table. And I just wanted to create a space where I can lay all my shit out on the table, sift through it, and figure out what the Fucking Thing really is and how to do it even when you’re scared.

My only credibility to talk about anything I talk about on this blog is that I’m really good at fucking shit up, really semi-good at putting it back together and really great at being honest about the process. But to be clear- the purpose of this blog is not advice-giving. (Although I have a tendency to do that.) It’s really just about one human jumping into the void and writing about it and, in the process, reminding all the other people in the void, myself included, that we’re not alone. As cheesy as that may sound. Whatever. Sometimes being honest with ourselves and others requires sentimentality. It’s fine. It’s all part of the Fucking Thing.

Love Always,

Saint Margaret
